The Chop it Pantry: Automatic Management, Explained
By Alex Fahey, founder of Chop it. Last updated 16 August 2026.
Definition. The pantry is Chop it's record of what your kitchen holds, across fridge, freezer and cupboards. Its design principle is automatic management: the record maintains itself from what you already do, cooking and shopping, rather than asking to be edited. A pantry you have to maintain by hand is a pantry you abandon by February.
How things go in
Photograph a food shop or a veg box and confirm what the scan recognised, or add items by hand when that is quicker. Staples are handled as staples: the salt and olive oil you always own do not need re-declaring every week.
How things come off
Mark a meal cooked and its ingredients come off the pantry. Unmark it, because plans changed, and they go back. That one loop is what keeps the record honest without any bookkeeping: cooking is the edit.
How time is handled
Every item starts with a reminder window matched to its type rather than one flat timer. These are planning defaults, not food-safety dates: packaging instructions and labelled use-by dates always take precedence. Chop it starts fish at two days, raw meat at three, leafy herbs and soft fruit at four, fresh dairy at five, hardy vegetables at a fortnight, and tins and dry goods at six weeks or more. Items are flagged to use before the reminder passes, and anything past it is marked rather than silently deleted, so you decide what leaves.

This is where the pantry meets food waste: the flag arrives while the ingredient is still dinner, which is the only time a reminder is worth anything.
Bulk changes are a sentence
Back from holiday with a fridge that needs clearing, or starting fresh after a big shop: tell the chat. "Empty my fridge" has the app list what would go and clear it on your confirmation. One instruction with a check, rather than an evening of tapping or an AI deleting food records unasked.
What it feeds
Two things depend on the pantry being roughly right, and both are the reason it exists. Recipe suggestions can start from what you own rather than what a recipe demands. And the shopping list subtracts what the kitchen already holds, which is the difference between a list you trust and one you learn to ignore.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to keep the pantry up to date by hand?
No, and that is the point of it. Shops go in as you add them, including photographed shops and veg boxes. Ingredients come off when you mark a meal cooked and return if you unmark it. Bulk changes are one confirmed chat instruction, such as emptying the fridge before a holiday.
How does the pantry handle food going off?
Each item gets a default planning reminder matched to its type. The app flags items before that reminder passes and marks overdue items rather than silently deleting them. These reminders are not food-safety dates; packaging instructions and labelled use-by dates always take precedence.
